More Than One Hundred and Ten Years Ago

I n 1930, Ira H. Wilson, the owner and operator of Wilson Undertaking, located on the north side of the square in Fredonia since 1905, sought for a place where an establishment could be built to house every facility of a first class funeral establishment, one that could provide ample chapel space, reception and preparation rooms, state rooms and, if possible, a covered drive for the cars for family attendants.

It is no secret that, at the time Ira Wilson was considered more or less “at sea” when he stated he would take over the old Stone Barn, at the northeast corner of the downtown square in Fredonia. He stated that the Stone Barn had all the possibilities for every improvement he had in mind.

The visions of this prominent community leader transformed the Stone Barn into the Wilson Funeral Home, which was envied and admired by those in the profession all across the state.
